Helen was born on February 16, 1927, on a farm two miles south of Gregory, South Dakota to Joseph and Mary (Cahoy) Pesek. She was the youngest of seven children. In 1929, the family moved on a farm southwest of Colome, South Dakota. Helen attended Pleasant View Rural School and Colome High School. On June 20, 1944, she married Joseph Maska. They resided on a farm near Hamill. In 1947, Helen and her husband purchased their farm five miles north of Colome. They were blessed with two daughters, Marlene Rae and Carol Jo. Helen and Joe enjoyed the farm, raising cattle, working the land, visiting with neighbors, and going to Czech dances. Her mother taught her to do one good thing for someone every day, and she tried to live by her mother's principle. Helen treasured her flower and vegetable gardens, watching things grow, and sharing her bounty with her friends. Helen's loving hands baked many kolaches and rolls, which were shared by all who knew her. She never failed to send a birthday card, get well card, or anniversary card to all her family and friends. Helen was proud of her Czech heritage. She loved listening to "Polka Joe" on Saturday nights. She was an active member of the Winner United Methodist Church, where she was lovingly known as "Aunt Helen". She belonged to the Faith Hope Circle, Sully Homemaker Extension Club, Western Fraternal Life Association, Ideal Rebekah Lodge of Colome, Birthday Club, and many card clubs. Helen lived 84 years of her life in Tripp County. She lived her last three months of her life with her daughters in Kokomo, Indiana. Survivors include: her daughters, Marlene (Greg) Hoppes of Kokomo, IN; Carol (Jack) Kindlesparker of Kokomo, IN; four grandchildren: Donnelle (Taylor) Miller, Kokomo, IN; Eric (Shannon) Wortman, Washington, D.C.; David Hoppes, Kokomo, IN; and Laura Wortman, Jeffersonville, IN; Five Great-Grandchildren: Logan Miller, Morgan Miller, Sadie Wortman, Teddy Wortman, and Molly Wortman; her South Dakota daughter, JoAnn Haffield, great niece Julie (Ryan) Rohde, Great nephew Jerry (Pam) Haffield and many nieces, nephews, and a wealth of friends.
