Darwin Collins Blair was born April 1, 1822 in New York to Mary Collins and Brown Blair. On October 17, 1847 in Jo Daviess County, Illinois he married Annie Elizabeth Wilson. He was a well educated man and wrote a beautiful hand. He taught school for several years before coming west. He and Annie Elizabeth left Illinois in 1852 and moved to California where they lived in the Sacramento and Stockton area for several years. Darwin and Annie homesteaded in Mendocino County, California in the early 1860's on a farm seven miles south of Laytonville. They sold to a Cal Hardin in 1900 and moved to Stockton to live with their eldest daughter, Mary Priscilla Blair Fairbanks. Darwin and Annie had eleven children. Darwin was very interested in politics and was a Republican. He loved to read and to play cards. His nick-name was "Yankie". He died November 3, 1907 of Nephritis at the home of daughter Mary in Stockton.
