Bio

Henry Solon Lovell came to California from Indiana via the Isthmus of Panama with his parents who settled in Auburn. He attended schools there and around 1862 came to Mendocino County and earned a living as a vaquero in the mountains near Round Valley. He worked pack trains and became a teamster. He and Sarah Begley were married June 1866 in Stringtown at ages 16 and 14. They purchased a mountain ranch which was later sold to move into Round Valley. Besides farming, he built houses and became the undertaker for the valley. He also held local officies and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. The family numbered 11 children: Harry, Walter, Sylvia, Clara, Frank, Angela, Maude, Margaret, Charles and Mabert.
