Joe T. (Jody) Svehlak, 71, passed away peacefully on Tuesday July 17, 2013. Jody was born in Granger, Texas on October 23, 1941 to the late Annie (Novak) and August Svehlak, Sr. Jody was a celebrated running back for the Granger High School football team. He was elected Most Athletic by his classmates in 1961. Upon high school graduation, he attended Temple Junior College on a Track scholarship and majored in history. He served in the US Army from 1965 to 1967 on deployment in Okinawa during the Vietnam War era and was honorably discharged on March 16, 1971. He was a fast-pitch softball pitcher for the Army in Okinawa and was proud of his undefeated status. He spent the last 31 years living in Lago Vista, Texas where he owned and operated a pest control business for over two decades. After he retired in 2004, he began operating a lawn care business which he thoroughly enjoyed. He became so successful that his son, Brad, recently joined the business working with him. Jody was a very active member of St. Mary, Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church and regularly ushered at Sunday Mass. He supported the Octoberfest for over 20 years with his popular breakfast taco booth. He also raised over $10,000 for the Parish Building Fund by selling tacos after Sunday Mass. Jody was proud to be a member of St. Mary's Council of the Knights of Columbus and achieved 4th Degree status. He recently received a 20-year anniversary certificate of his membership in the Knights. He is survived by his wife, Chris, of 45 years and their sons, Brad and Dustin and daughter-in-law, Jenifer. He was the youngest of 11 children and is survived by his sisters Agnes Cervenka, Annie Vanek, Martha Huff, Vlasta Kaderka, Dorothy Adamek, and Alice Kubacak; brother Louis Svehlak; sisters-in-law Hortense Svehlak, Darlene Svehlak and Maria Svehlak; and brothers-in-law Willie Cervenka, Charlie Betak and Leroy Kubacak. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Lillian Cervenka and Mary Ochoa; brother August Svehlak, Jr.; brothers-in-law Emil Cervenka, Anton Vanek, Johnny Huff, August Kaderka, Sr., Tino Ochoa and Johnny Adamek; and father-in-law Ernie Corber. He is also survived by mother-in-law, Jane Corber; sisters-in law Linda Wallace, Mary Dodds, Connie Banks, Lisa Corber; brothers-in law Pat Corber, Robert Wallace, Kevin Dodds, and Bob Banks and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at 5:30 p.m. followed by a Rosary at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 21st and Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 22nd at St. Mary, Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 6100 Lohman Ford in Lago Vista. A reception will follow the service at K-Oaks Clubhouse in Lago Vista. Interment will be held Monday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the St. Mary's Council of the Knights of Columbus or the American Heart Association.
