Bio

Life and Times of Melvin B. Jones Melvin Blythe Jones was born in Tyler on Nov. 21, 1919, to John and Mary Jones. He attended Hogg Junior High and graduated from Tyler High. During his high school years, he played football and helped the team go to the state finals in 1938. After high school, he worked in Tyler for George Erwin in a machine shop. In 1940, he moved to Houston, where he worked for Reed Roller Bit until World War II broke out in December 1941. He and a longtime friend, Benton Harris, joined the U.S. Navy together. He was stationed in the Pacific on the Galapagos Islands. While home on leave, he met and married Mary Pauline "Polly" Campbell of Brashear. The Navy stationed Melvin in Miami, Fla., where their first son, Larry, was born. After he was discharged from the Navy, the family moved back to Tyler. In 1946, he started work for King Chevrolet, in Tyler. In 1948, Melvin and Polly's second son, Dennis, was born. Melvin retired from King Chevrolet as service manager in 1981. Melvin was a longtime member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, between Tyler and Whitehouse. He requested to be buried in Bascom Cemetery, beside his loving wife of 65 years, Polly Jones, who died on Sept. 16, 2009. He is survived by two brothers, Herman A. Jones, age 99, and his twin, Murray G. Jones, age 93, both of Tyler; sons, Larry B. Jones, Dennis R. Jones and daughter-in-law Jan Jones, of Brownsboro; grandchildren, Lori McManus and husband Chris, of Tucson, Ariz., Justin Jones and wife Misty, of Tyler; and great-grandchildren, Taylor Far-mer, Mackenzie Taylor, Jacob McManus, Collin Jones and Andrew Jones. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, July 19, 2013, in the chapel of Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Home with the Rev. Sherman Mayfield officiating. Burial will follow in Bascom Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. to service time at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be James Proctor, Randy Murphy, Glenn Malone, Roy Sheets, Don Davidson and Jerry Darden. Honorary pallbearer will be Don Martin. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Hospice of East Texas Foundation, 4111 University Blvd., Tyler, 75701.
