Clifford and Alice farmed for three years and lived with his mother on the old home place established by his parents. In 1920, a very dry year, they became discouraged with the next year's cotton price dropping to seven cents a pound. Alice taught school and Clifford went back to college. They taught public school for couple of years before he accepted a position with the US Indian Service and first taught on the Tule River reservation in California. He later transferred to a Navajo reservation in Arizona and after five years transferred to a Papago reservation also in Arizona and later at two other reservations in the state. After 30 years in the service, Clifford retired and they moved back to Arlington Texas, where Alice died of cancer in 1959 shortly after their move. In 1969, Clifford married a widow, Lillian Blackman, and they lived in the Valley Mills, Texas area. In his later years, Clifford did much research on the Carruth family. Clifford was an outstanding man, respected by all who knew him. From Whence Ye Came by Lela Grant Carruth Contributed by Lynn Waller
