The Deshler Rustler (Deshler, NE), Wednesday, April 7, 1965; pg. 1 OBITUARY OF FRED HOFTS Fred Hofts, son of John Hofts and his wife, Mary, nee Bammels, was born August 19, 1880, near Ruskin, Nebr., and was baptised Sept 6. He was four years old when his mother died. His step-mother died in 1953. He was confirmed by Pastor H. H. Dagefoerde in St. Paul Lutheran Church (also known as the Spring Lutheran Church), northwest of Deshler, April 3, 1898. April 7, 1915, he was united in marriage with Amy Fisher by Pastor Kreckeler. This union was blessed with two daughters and three sons, Mary, Flora, John, Lewis and Alfred. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church until it disbanded in 1957, when he became a member of Peace Lutheran in Deshler. He was a life-long member and farmer of Nuckolls County. Three years ago Thanksgiving he took seriously ill and never really recovered from that. He suffered a broken hip in a fall at home two years ago. During these 3 1/2 years that he was a shut-in his wife, Amy, cared for him faithfully. Together with his family he looked forward to the golden wedding anniversary planned for April 4. However, "man proposes and God disposes"; for just a week before his general condition suddenly became much worse. In His mercy God released him from this" vale of tears" Thursday evening, April 1, at the age of 84 years, 7 months, and 13 days. He was preceded in death by one brother, Henry; two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Braun and Mrs. Flora Tambke; one half brother, George; one half sister, Mrs. Henry Windhorst. There remain to cherish his memory the widow, Amy; and the following children and their families: Mary, Mrs. Raymond HurlberL Lincoln; Flora, Mrs. Alvin Brettmann, Hebron; John, Hardy: Lewis and Alfred, at home with their mother; also 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Sena Vorderstrasses (sic), Chester; two half sisters, Mrs. Mary Ohlrich of Deshler and Mrs. Martha Durflinger of Hebron; one half brother, Otto, Deshler; one sister-in-law, Rena Hofts; two brothers-in-law, Henry Windhorst of Deshler and Arnold Durflinger of Hebron, besides other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held April 4 from Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Erwin F. Janssen speaking on Phil. 1:21. The Senior Choir sang "For Me To Live Is Jesus", while the congregational hymns were: "Jerusalem, Thou City Fair And High" and "Take My Hand, Dear Father". Burial was in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery with the following serving as pall bearers: Albert Braun, Erwin Ohlrich, Erwin Windhorst, Glen Harold Hofts, Arthur Vorderstrasse. ======================================== Chester Herald (Chester, NE), Wednesday, April 7, 1965; pg. 6 Fred Hofts Dies Fred Hofts, age 84, passed away at his farm home northwest of Byron April 1. Mr. and Mrs. Hofts were to have celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary Sunday, April 4. Survivors include his wife, Amy; daughters Flora (Mrs. Alvin Brettman) of Hebron, Mary (Mrs. Ray Hurlburt) of Lincoln; and sons, Alfred and Lewis of Byron and John of Hardy. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, April 4, in Peace Lutheran Church, Deshler. Burial was in St Paul Lutheran Cemetery northwest of Deshler.
