Merle Hanna, 81, of Meridian died Friday, June 7, 2013 at at Meridian hospital. Arrangements are pending at Summers Funeral Home, Ustick Chapel, Meridian. Published in Idaho Statesman on June 9, 2013 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Merle L. Hanna 1931 ~ 2013 Merle L. Hanna, Eagle, Idaho formerly of Rupert, Idaho, passed away Friday, June 7, 2013 from an apparent heart attack. Merle was born August 17, 1931 to Joseph and Frances Hanna in Central City, Nebraska. He graduated from Emmett High School and worked in a logging camp in Oregon before going to Boise Junior College where he played football. Merle served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He married the love of his life, Zola Bonde, on August 28, 1955. They were married 57 years. Merle attended watch-making school at North Junior College in Coeur d'Alene. After graduation, Merle worked in Twin Falls with a manufacturing jeweler and then purchased a jewelry store in Rupert where he recently retired after 51 years of business. Merle coached Little League football, taught hunter safety classes, and was supportive of the 4-H and Future Farmers of America groups. He was active in Kiwanis, Chamber of Commerce, Rupert Elk's Lodge, and Rupert Country Club. He donated trophies to the local rodeo queens, most valuable players in football and basketball, and wrist watches at annual sports banquets and FFA. He helped organize the city's annual Easter egg hunt, and Santa's visits to the Rupert Square. He recently retired as Fire Commissioner after 16 years of service. Merle is survived by his wife, Zola; daughter, Roni (Bob) Atkins of Eagle; son, Chris of Rupert; and daughter, Julie of Eagle; grandchildren, Nathan Burch of Tampa, FL; and Kameron Burch of Boise; sister, Violet Friend; and two brothers, Orville and Arley Hanna, all of Boise. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial services will be held at 12:30 pm, Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at First Praise Chapel, 1100 8th St, Rupert. Graveside inurnment services will be held at 4:00 pm, Thursday, June 13, 2013 at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, 10100 N Horseshoe Bend Rd, Boise. Memorial donations may be made to Minidoka County Fire Protection District, 1120 21 St, Heyburn, Idaho 83336.
