Deseret News, The (Salt Lake City, UT) - Tuesday, August 15, 2000 On August 13, 2000, at the age of 83, Elden John "Jack" Bawden, beloved husband,father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, returned home to his Heavenly Father. He was born December 13, 1916 in Granger, Utah, first son of Bishop John Henry and Kate Warr Bawden. He was married to Kathryn McBride Bawden for 22 years. They had six children together, three boys and three girls. They were later divorced. In 1964 he married Helen Burt Bawden in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Helen had four children, three boys and one daughter. They were completely devoted to each other and together they raised the blended family of ten children. Handsome, like Clark Gable, he loved to sing "You Are My Sweetheart" to Helen and did so often. Jack was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served in many callings including High Counselor, Bishop, and Stake Missionary. He and Helen served a mission in the Los Angeles Visitor's Center. He was a master of the scriptures and took great joy in serving the elderly and widowed church members. He was proud of his service in the CC Camp during The Depression. He was an engineer for the Union Pacific Railroad for 38 years. He also worked for Kennecott Copper when he was young. Jack had a great love of the outdoors, hunting, fishing, traveling, and working the land for his vegetable and flower gardens. He loved to write and recite poetry and entertained many when he played his harmonica. Light on his feet, Jack loved to dance and met his life long dance partner, Helen, where they socialized at the friendly club. Survived by his beloved wife, of 36 years, Helen Burt Bawden; children, Janet (Gary)McPhie; Blaine (Ina) Hoskins; Christie (Doug) Foster; Jay Hoskins; Charlene (Mike)Peterson; Bruce (Terri) Bawden; Dale (Nancy) Hoskins; Jeff (Janine) Bawden; and Robert "Bob" (Helena) Bawden, son-in-law, Shane Stoddard, and 35 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; two brothers, LaGrand (Bense) Bawden, Salt Lake City, Don Jay Bawden, Orem; two sisters, Lorene Tervort, Payson, and Norma Earl, West Valley City. He was preceded in death by his parents and his precious daughter, Patricia Ann Bawden Stoddard, a brother, David Lamar Bawden and two sisters, Mildred Barney and Elva Maddy. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 17, 2000 at 12 noon in the Bluffdale 2nd Ward, 14400 South 1700 West. Friends may call Wednesday, August 16, 2000 from 6-8 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road, and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church. Interment, Larkin Sunset Gardens.
