Bio

KEARNEY — Agnes Elizabeth Cernik, 93, of Kearney, formerly of Ord, passed away Friday, Sept. 19, 2014, at St. John’s Good Samaritan Center in Kearney. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Ord Memorial Chapel in Ord, with the Rev. Trevor Rook officiating. Burial will be in the Ord Bohemian Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Cernik was born Jan. 14, 1921, to Frank and Emma (Maresh) Bruha, on a farm just west of Ord. She grew up with three sisters and one brother, living through the Great Depression and World War II. She also worked as a nurse’s assistant at a residence in Kearney and later at the Army Ammunition Plant in Grand Island. On Oct. 2, 1946, she married Frank Cernik. They raised their three children on a farm near North Loup. She will always be remembered for her famous dumplings and red gravy, canned fruits and vegetables and her recipe for frozen creamed corn. She raised many flocks of chickens, ducks and geese. The neighbors looked forward to buying eggs from her every week. The couple attended polka dances regularly. She was also a member of the Ord VFW Auxiliary. Frank and Agnes moved to Ord when they retired. She enjoyed friends, family and working at the Valley County Hospital. Several years later, when Frank was moved to a skilled nursing home in Kearney, Agnes moved to Kearney to be closer to him. They celebrated 64 years of marriage the year Frank passed away. Agnes continued her stay in Kearney. She had extremely good health for almost all of her 93 years, until the last two months. She will be dearly missed by many friends and family. Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Betty Robinson of Kearney and Charlene and Alan Hruby of Hansen; and a daughter-in-law, RaNae Cernik of Kearney. She was blessed with seven grandchildren and their spouses, Keith Robinson of St. Louis, Mo.; Scott Hruby of Hastings; Douglas and Novelyn Hruby of Kearney; Christina and Jon Barber of Hickman; Kathleen and Matt Honke of Roca; Amanda Cernik of Ravenna and Michael Cernik of Kearney; and 4 Great-grandchildren. Agnes is also survived by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Minnie Vopat of Kearney and Dorothy and Tom Meuret of Grand Island; and many nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Frank C. Cernik; an infant daughter; a sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Mike Hulinsky; and a brother, Vincent Bruha.
