Former Mayor of Oklahoma City James Henry 'Jim' Norick was born January 23, 1920 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (Oklahoma County), son of Henry Calvin Norick (1894-1973) and Ruth Coleman (1897-1993). When his father died, Jim took over as head of Norick Brothers, Inc., a family printing business in Oklahoma city, established in 1910. Jim attended Putnam Heights Elementary, Harding Junior High, and Classen High School in Oklahoma City, graduating from Classen in 1938. From there he attended the Oklahoma Military Academy in Claremore on a music scholarship and later was inducted as the first member of OMA's Hall of Fame. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945 during World War II. Norick served as Oklahoma City councilman for Ward One from 1951 to 1955,and in 1959 he ran for mayor as a Democrat. Norick served as mayor from 1959 to 1963 and 1967 to 1971. During his second term he oversaw the cleaning up and beautification of Oklahoma City with projects that included improving Classen Boulevard. In 1940, Jim married Madalynne Helen King, who was born January 29, 1922, in Oklahoma City, daughter of Gail Foster King (1897-1980) and Goldie Helen Cadwallader (1896-1978). Jim and Madalynne had two children, Ronald James Norick and Vickie Lynne Norick Koumaris. In 1969, while mayor, Jim served as the potentate of the India Temple Shrine. In 1971, he completed his second term as mayor and decided to step down from public office, In that same year, the city rechristened the fairgrounds arena Jim Norick State Fairgrounds Arena. In 1982, Norick family donations, contributed to the building of the Norick Art Center on Oklahoma City University's campus. James died at age 95 on March 5, 2015 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (oklahoma County) and will be interred in the Abbey Mausoleum in the Rose Hill Burial Park next to his wife, Madalynne.
