Bio

Charles Bradfield was born at Newbury, Berkshire, England, on October 20, 1840, and his death occurred at his home in Lamoni, Iowa, Monday morning, June 21, 1915. His age was 74 years, 8 months, and 1 day. On the morning of June 4, just seventeen days prior to his death, a stroke of paralysis made him helpless in body and unable to speak to anyone, but he appeared to have no pain and seemed in a state of rest and peace as to both body and mind. He recognized those he was familiar with and pressed their hands with his left hand. Also for several days, he had a fair appetite, but this failed and he grew weaker, until, in the presence of wife, children, and friends, he passed quietly away, as a child to sleep. Mr. and Mrs. Bradfield were married in Newbury, England, September 11, 1859. They came to America in 1861, living for one year in Williams-burg, New York. In 1862 they removed to Utah, going with an ox team from Omaha across the plains along with others. There they saw the evils and wrongs existing there under false leadership, but had no part in them. And in 1809, when Alexander and David Smith came to Utah with the message of the Reorganized Church and preached the pure gospel, their hopes revived and their hearts were made glad. So they accepted it in 1870 and returned east in 1871, settling near Council Bluffs, Iowa. There they remained until 1893, when they came here and have been residents of Lamoni twenty-two years. Mr. Bradfield ran a blacksmith shop, for several years on the corner where the A. R. Judson building now stands. Four children were born to them, one in England and three in America, all boys. Three died in their childhood, and only one remains, Frank Bradfield, a well-known citizen of Lamoni. [Frank] and his wife have three children, one son, and two daughters. However, in 1880 Mr. and Mrs. Bradfield adopted a baby girl, who is now Mrs. Burdette Bergerson of Radville, Saskatchewan, Canada. Mr. Bradfield left a record for integrity of life, honesty in dealings, and uprightness of character that can not be excelled. He was a conscientious man, unobtrusive in his manner, and had many friends and no enemies. The funeral services were held at the Saints' Church on Wednesday afternoon in charge of John Smith. Sermon by H. A. Stebbins, assisted by R. M. Elvin. There was a large congregation present and hundreds manifested deep sympathy for Mrs. Bradfield and her family.
