Robert Cook was the son of John and Martha Jane Anderson Franklin and may have been born in Bedford or Pittsylvania County. He joined the Second Cavalry during the Civil War, and may have fought in more units. He remained single, no children. He is counted in the 1870 census with two other young men, all in their twenties, all salesmen. I will duly note that he was the brother of Jacob Henry Franklin and I will attach this page to the father of that brother. I can't seem to reconcile the mother. *** Mr. Thomas C. Franklin, Recently appointed city sergeant of Lynchburg, by Judge Garland, died suddenly at the residence of his brother Capt. Jacob H. Franklin, last Friday morning. Alexandria Gazette Alexandria, Virginia 20 Feb 1871 pg 2, col 6 *** Mr. Thomas C. Franklin, City Sergeant of Lynchburg, quite suddenly Friday morning. He had been suffering some time with a bronchical [sic] affection , but on the morning of his death he ate a hearty breakfast, and called for more. While it was preparing he suddenly exclaimed, "I believe I am dying," and immediately fell back and expired. The Progress-Index Petersburg, Virginia 20 Feb 1871 pg 2, col 3
