Michael Francis Kelly was born in Cherryvale, Kansas to Dennis Kelly and Mary Ann McDevitt. He had 11 siblings: William, Charles, Mary Ann, Dennis, Thomas, John Joseph, Dennis, Rosella, James, Catherine, Elizabeth and Leo. He married Mary Jane Altendorf in 1911. Together, they raised children Syrena, Lawrence, and Loretta.
