Ernest "Ernie" Makovy, brother, husband, father, and grandfather, and a reporter, rewrite man, and newspaper editor, was born in Waco in November 1949 and grew up in West, Texas. Makovy attended Baylor University and was hired as a reporter at the Waco Tribune-Herald by Murray Neal, managing editor, while Makovy was still a student at Baylor. Ernie was well-known in Texas journalism for his reporting and editorial skill. The Ft. Worth Star Telegram wrote, in its obituary for him, "He had been a Star-Telegram editor since 1989, where he was known for his mastery of the fast-breaking news story and for his excellence and skill in being a rewrite man." Ernie died unexpectedly while working in his backyard in Arlington, Texas. Ernie is survived by his second wife, Patricia Todd Makovy, his son and daughter, and their children, and his brother and four sisters.
