LaCygne, Kansas Newspaper 17 June 1904 Father and Daughter at Rest For some time sickness has be in the family of Colonel Stephen Weech and friends and relatives were not surprised on last Thursday to learn of the death of Mrs. Rose Gilliland and on Sunday to her of the death of the Colonel. The Weech Family is one of the oldest here. They came to America in 1854. In 1858 Stephen Weech, who was born in Summerton, Somersetshire, England on August 25th, 1837, came to Kansas, which was then as wild a land as one could find. He was made of the metal that clears the forest and puts under the plow the rich and fertile lands of our valleys. He settled on Brooklyn ridge but remained there only a short time when he removed to the Weech homestead, two miles east of LaCygne a farm that is known far and wide. His holdings of land increased until he owned many acres of the very best land in this locality. His characteristics were of nature that makes him a man peculiarly like himself only. It has often been truthfully said, “There is only one Col. Weech.” He imitated no one. While he was a usual thing neighborly and in good humor with all, yet he had a keen business sense and a transaction was never lost sight of by him. The daughter, Mrs. Rose Gilliland, whose death occurred first, was a woman who inherited the business qualifications of her father and to her management in later years was greatly due the success of the farm. She was born at the old homestead on May 27th, 1864 and was married to George Gilliland in 1891. To them one son was born, who is now about twelve years old. Col. Weech came from a Christian family and in early life attended religious services. He came to the frontier and was alienated from such associations, thus forming a neglect of spiritual matters. He was married to Miss Eliza Rose soon after coming to Kansas and they were the parents of three daughters - Mrs. Mary Hampton and Mrs. Rose Gilliland, both deceased and Mrs. Lizzie Grisham. The widow survives him, but she took quite sick. The Colonel has three sister and three brothers living. They are Mrs. Lizzie Gustafson of Red Oak, Iowa and Mrs. Julius Rose of this city, Joseph and John Weech of Illinois and James Weech of California. The Daughter’s funeral was held on Saturday and the funeral of the father was held on Monday, each from the Christian Church, conducted by Rev. Blanding. Interment took place in Oak Lawn cemetery.
