Fannie Jane was born 6/22/1858 in Knoxville, Knox County, TN. Her father served in the Civil War from 1861-1865. After the Civil War, Fannie Jane's parents moved the family from Union County, TN to Ellis County, TX sometime between 1867 and 1870. According to family lore, the family was run out of Tennessee by carpetbaggers. Fannie Jane married William Jesse Gray in Ellis County, TX on 11/18/1875. In about 1888, Fannie Jane and William Gray moved the family to Dallas, Dallas County, TX. Fannie Jane (and her husband William Jesse) are listed in the 1900 Dallas County, TX census as residing at 611 Main Street. According to the 1899 Dallas street map, 611 Main is labeled as "Gray Hotel" and it is located in the present day 2300 block of Main Street, which is underneath the present day southbound I-75/345 overhead freeway. Fannie Jane and William Jesse Gray operated the Gray Hotel. Fannie Jane's parents, Isaac and Lucinda Miller, are listed as living next door at 609 Main Street, which is also labeled as the "Gray Hotel" on the 1899 Dallas street map. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Mrs. Gray died Monday afternoon after a long illness. She was a native of Tennessee and came to Dallas in 1888.
