Bio

William was born in Arkansas, shortly after his parents moved there from North Carolina. William's family resided in Arkansas from approximately 1850 until just after the Civil War. Sometime between 1865-1869, the family moved from Arkansas to Ellis County, TX. William married Fannie Jane Brown in Ellis County, TX on 11/18/1875. William is listed in the following records: 1874 Ellis County, TX Tax Roll - only listed with personal property 1875 Ellis County, TX Tax Roll - only listed with personal property 1876 Ellis County, TX Tax Roll - owned 100 acres + personal property 1880 Ellis County, TX census - with wife & 2 children living next to wife, Fannie Jane Brown's family 1881 Ellis County, TX Tax Roll - listed with a horse and buggy, but no land 1882 Ellis County, TX Tax Roll - listed with a horse and buggy, but no land 1883 Ellis County, TX Tax Roll - listed with a horse and buggy, but no land In about 1888, William Jesse moved the family to Dallas, Dallas County, TX. William is listed in the following records: 1890 Dallas County, TX Tax Roll 1894 Dallas County, TX Tax Roll William Jesse (and his wife Fannie Jane and son Jesse M) are listed in the 1900 Dallas County, TX census as residing at 611 Main Street. According to the 1899 Dallas street map, 611 Main is labeled as "Gray Hotel" and it is located in the present day 2300 block of Main Street, which is underneath the present day southbound I-75/345 overhead freeway. Fannie Jane and William Jesse Gray operated the Gray Hotel.
