Bio
Darold A. Szafrajda, 74, of Grand Island died Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at the V.A. Medical Center in Omaha. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday from the auditorium of the Grand Island Veterans Home, with the Rev. Richard Piontkowski officiating. Inurnment of the ashes will be in the Burkett Cemetery, Grand Island. Apfel Funeral Home of Grand Island is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Szafrajda was born Jan. 14, 1939, in Ashton to Frank T. and Mary (Kuffel) Szafrajda. Survivors of the immediate family include a daughter and son-in-law, Gina and Cory Lyons of Lincoln. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Analyse and Porter Lyons; along with many nieces and nephews. He grew up near Shelton, graduating from Shelton High School. He attended a Community College. He was drafted into the United States Army, Oct. 31, 1961, and received his honorable discharge Oct. 30, 1964. He made his home in Grand Island, where he was employed as a supervisor for Ford New Holland and later worked in the mail room at the Veteran's Hospital. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, VFW and Eagles Club. He enjoyed the outdoors and hunting. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Frank Szafrajda; and a sister, Roseanne.
