DOUGHERTY, S.R. "Swanky Bob" b 4-5-1849 d 4-24-1922; s James & Elizabeth Mobley *Howard County Cemetery Records, by Louise Coutts and Karen Boggs. HIGBEE NEWS (Randolph County MO) Friday, 28 Apr 1922, Vol 36, No 2--S. R. DOUGHERTY DEAD--S. R. Dougherty, one of Howard county's best known farmers and most highly respected citizens, died at his home near Myers on Monday, April 24, from dropsy, with which he had been afflicted for a year or more. He came to town several weeks ago for treatment and for a time seemed to improve, but Saturday he realized that his time was very short and requested that he be taken home that he might pass away near the place of his birth and amid the scenes of his childhood and where he had spent the greater part of his 73 years. Death found him prepared and unafraid, and his passing was as calm and peaceful as his life had been. Mr. Dougherty was a good man and a good citizen and was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him. Funeral services were conducted at New Hope Wednesday by the Rev. E. Y. Keiter, the church, despite the bad roads, being filled to overflowing with sorrowing relatives and friends, which spoke most eloquently of the esteem in which deceased was held. SQUIRE ROBERT DOUGHERTY was the son of "Uncle" JIMMY DOUGHERTY, who lived beyond 90 years, and whose birthday anniversary was an event in Howard county for a quarter of a century, and was born in Howard county on April 24, 1849. He was married to Miss NANCY BALL on May 26, 1870. They were the parents of nine children--eight daughters and one son--but four of whom, with the mother, survive, viz: Mrs. MARTHA O'BRIEN, Moberly; Mrs. MARY GRAPES, Mrs. ORA O'BRIEN of Howard county, and Mrs. ULAH ROBERTS of this place. He also leaves seventeen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, besides five brothers and four sisters, viz: S.E., WOODS, TIM, JEFF and JOSEPH DOUGHERTY, and Mrs. Y. L. ATKINS, Mrs. SARAH WILLIAMS, Mrs. MARY WOODS and Mrs. CALVIN GEORGE. Interment was made in New Hope cemetery by the side of his parents, children and other kindred with full honors of the Masonic fraternity, of which deceased had been a member for many years. *transcribed by Kathy Bowlin*
