HIGBEE NEWS (Randolph County, MO) Friday 4 June 1920, Vol 34, No 7--J. D. DOUGHERTY DEAD--J. D. Dougherty, one of Higbee's most highly respected citizens, died at his home in this place at 3:16 p. m. Friday, May 28, from Bright's disease, from which he had been suffering for the past two years. Funeral services were held at New Hope, Howard county, Sunday, by Rev. E. L. Rutledge, in the presence of one of the largest crowds that had assembled at the church on a similar occasion in years, the building not being large enough by half to accommodate the people, which spoke more eloquently than words of the esteem in which he was held. -Deceased was the son of the late Jimmy Dougherty, and was born in Howard county, near Myers, on April 13, 1851, and was therefore 69 years old. He was married in about 1870 to Miss Ella Durnil, who died some three or four years ago. They were the parents of eleven children, all of whom survive, viz: James, Arthur, J. W., Cleveland, Hawkins, Charles, Mrs. Anna Stetson, Mrs. Lizzie Gardner, Mrs. Pearl McMullen, Mrs. Ethel Chism and another daughter whose name we were unable to learn. He also leaves six brothers and four sisters--S. R., J. L., S. E., Timothy, J. M., and J. F. Dougherty, Mrs. Annie Atkins, Mrs. JakeWilliams, Mrs. Mary George and Mrs. Dora Dyre. He married Mrs. Amanda Howell in October, 1917, who also survives. Mr. Dougherty was a consecrated Christian gentleman and had the respect of all who knew him. It was our good fortune to have known him for many years and in all of our dealing with him we found him to be a gentleman of the highest honor and integrity, and one who always had a kindly word for everybody.
