R.J. Bateman, 54, passed away Saturday, May 31, at 1:50 a.m. in Lubbock Methodist Hospital following a lengthy illness. Mr. Bateman was a native of Afton, where he lived most of his life. He moved to Lubbock a few years ago. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. R.J. Bateman of Afton. Funeral services were held at Afton Baptist Church, Sunday at 3 p.m. Rev. Johnny Nelson of Amherst officiated, assisted by Rev. Pratt of Afton and Rev. Dyer of Spur. Survivors include four sisters, Mrs. Myrtice Taylor of El Paso; Mrs. Reba Hobbs of Spur; Mrs. Ann Howard of Afton; Mrs. Alice Edwards of Lubbock; four brothers, Jessie Bateman of Quitman, Paul Bateman and Bass Bateman of Spur, Ray Bateman of Afton, also a dear friend, Ruby Johnston of Lubbock. Pallbearers were nephews: Wayne Bateman of Houston; Dale Edwards of Lubbock; Ray Bateman, Jr. of Corpus Christi; Stanley Bateman of Ingram, Ronnie Kirby of Dallas and Bobby Kirby of Dallas. Burial was in Afton Cemetery under direction of Campbell Funeral Home of Spur. Published: The Texas Spur, June 5, 1975
