Jens Petersen Lauritzen was born on November 5, 1825 to Lauritz and Margrette Petersen Jensen. He served in the Danish Army from 1848 to 1850. On March 23, 1862, Jens joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He immigrated to the United States in 1863 and came to Hyrum, Utah. Jens married Annie Kersteina Larsen on May 11, 1874 in the Endowment House in Salt lake City, Utah. They had 10 children: Heber, Erastus, Christine, Annie, Rasmine, James, Orson, George, Johannah and John. Jens loved horses. He had good teams of horses as well as good teams of oxen. Jens purchased one of the first threshing machines to be used in Hyrum. Jens died on February 12, 1904. He is buried in the Hyrum Cemetery beside his wife, his daughter, Rasmine and his sons, Erastus and George.
