Grand Island Daily Independent Tuesday 17 Aug 1971 p. 2 John F. "Jack" Murphy, a retired conductor for the Union Pacific Railroad, died Monday evening in a local hospital. The family home is at 304 W. Eighth St. Arrangements for the funeral rites are pending at the Livingston-Sonderman Funeral Home. Mr. Murphy, a native of Ravenna, was born there July 7, 1894 to John and Agnes Goodwin Murphy. During his childhood, the family moved to a farm near Ravenna, and later to Grand Island. Mr. Murphy completed his schooling in Grand Island. On June 28, 1916 he enlisted in the United States Army and served on the Mexican Border. With the outbreak of World War 1, he served overseas in combat with the 329th Infantry. After he was honorably discharged on Feb. 12, 1919, he returned here. Mr. Murphy entered the service of the Union Pacific Railroad in the train service department, and had been a conductor for several years prior to his retirement in 1960. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church. He was affiliated with Hall County Post No. 1347 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; the Knights of Columbus; and the Union Pacific Old Timers Club. He and Miss Sarah T. Waite were married Nov. 18, 1919, in Grand Island. Mr. Murphy is survived by his wife; three sons, John V., Glendora, Calif., James of this city, and William, Burbank, Calif.; one brother, William Murphy, Grand Island; four sisters. sister M. Florencia, Concordia, Kan., Mrs. Charles Kaufman and Mrs. Harry Marsh, both of Grand Island, and Mrs. Stacia Jones, Riverside, Calif.; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Allen; and his parents.
