Grand Island (Nebraska) Independent Friday, July 5, 1935 John Murphy, sr., who came to Grand Island in 1877 and since has been a continuous resident of Nebraska, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. S. Marsh, 618 South Clark street, about 1:45 o'clock Thursday morning. Mr. Murphy had been ill for the past five years and, for more than two years, had been bedfast. Born June 18, 1852, at Teetertown (Lansingville) New York, the deceased when five years of age moved with his parents to Dubuque, Iowa, where he spent his early boyhood. He came to Grand Island in 1877 and entered the employ of the Union Pacific Railroad Co., which he served as yardmaster here and in South Omaha, and later in the train service. Before retiring from railroading, he also served as yardmaster for the C.B. & Q. Railroad company, in Ravenna. Upon his retirement, he purchased a farm near Dannebrog, Neb., which he operated for about seven years, before returning to this city. He served as a member of the Grand Island police department for a period of approximately eight years. On December 20, 1893, he was united in marriage to Agnes Goodwin, at Dannebrog, a union to which several children were born. Surviving besides his bereaved wife, are two sons, John, jr., and William, both of this city; and five daughters, Sister Florencia, of Silver City, N.M., and Mrs. O. B. Thompson, Mrs. H. S. Marsh, Mrs. R. E. Jones and Mrs. Charles Kaufman, all of this city; also thirteen grandchildren, a brother, J. E. Murphy, of Omaha, and two sisters, Mrs. Harry Jones, of Burkett, Neb., and Mrs. Alice Raynor, of Vernal, Utah. The funeral services will be held at nine o'clock, Saturday morning in St. Mary's Cathedral.
