~*~ EARL Dale "Dale" CARTWRIGHT ~*~ (September 9, 1922 ~ January 4, 1999) ** Veteran U.S. Air Force ** (WWII and Korean War) Earl Dale Cartwright, 76, of Scammon died at 7:17 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at the Beverly Rehabilitation Center in Pittsburg after a long illness. He was born Sept. 9, 1922, at Carona to John and Minnie Dockstader Cartwright. Mr. Cartwright lived in the Scammon area all of his life except for 10 years in Bonner Springs and three years in Lancaster, Calif. He attended Kansas State Teachers College in the vocational electronics department. Mr. Cartwright served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and the Korean War as a staff sergeant. He married Mary Joan Lawrence July 12, 1952, in Eureka Springs, Ark. She survives of the home. Mr. Cartwright was employed as an electronics technician for the Department of Defense for 10 years. He retired in 1970. Mr. Cartwright was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Scammon, where he served as a pastor and priest in 1975 and 1976; and was a member of the American Legion of Columbus. He served on the Hosey Hill Cemetery Board for 25 years and the Scammon City Council from 1972 to 1980. Other survivors include a daughter, Sandra Ross of Joplin; two sisters, Maxine Smittle and Hazel Speer, both of Columbus; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son and a daughter. Mr. Cartwright has been cremated in accordance with his wishes. No service is planned at this time. Burial will be in the Hosey Hill Cemetery at a later date. The family suggests memorials to the American Heart Association or the RLDS Church of Scammon. Contributions may be left at or mailed to the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 104 W. Main, Weir, 66781.
