The Childs family was one that survived the hardships of the wagon train and there were several intermarriages with the family of Mary Ann Cooper. East Texas was not the haven they had imagined and many times there were regrets about leaving Mississippi. Like so many other fighting the hardships of the Civil War's aftermath, they had hoped to buy cheap land in Texas and make good crops, but the land they found was not as productive as they were led to believe and the found life hard
