Bio

Joe Harlan Guthrie, age 82, of 112 South Second Street, died Sunday, October 31, 1993 at his home. Guthrie, the son of John Henry Guthrie and Emily Elizabeth Dyer Guthrie, was born in Clinton County, Kentucky, on May 19, 1911, the fifth of nine children. He attended the Albany City Schools, coming to Green County in the late 20s. He was one of the first persons to join the C.C.C.'s from Green County in 1933. He married Lucile Pickett in 1936 and to this union was born one son, Joe Pickett Guthrie. He was a merchant in Greensburg for several years beginning as a clerk in Monson's Department Store. Later he was the manager of the Firestone Store and then in partnership with L.E. (Chick) Pickett opened the Western Tire Store which he operated until retirement. He was a member of the Greensburg Methodist Church for more than 50 years and a member of the men's Bible class. He served on the Board of Trustees for several years. He was a member of the Greensburg Masonic Lodge and a charter member of the Green County Golf Association, being an avid golfer. He is survived by his wife, Lucile Pickett Guthrie, a former Superintendent of the Green County school system; his son, Joe Pickett Guthrie, assistant principal of the Bowling Green Junior High School; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Guthrie, a teacher in the McNeil School of Bowling Green; two granddaughters, Joanna Thomas, Supervisor of Nursing at the Rivendell Psychiatric Hospital of Bowling Green, and Jennifer Guthrie, a vice-president of Bank One in Dallas, Texas; one great-granddaughter, Erin Thomas of Bowling Green, and one great-grandson, Jacob Clayton Thomas of Bowling Green; one brother, Bill (Willie) Guthrie of Cleveland, Ohio; four sisters, Alice Booker of Tallahassee, Florida, Ann Hoffner of Fullerton, California, Ethel Miller of Strongsville, Ohio, and Dale McDaniel of Indialantic, Florida. Three brothers, Paul, Jim and Howard, preceded him in death. An aunt, Mrs. Elsie Dyer Higgenbotham of Albany also survives along with several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 3, at 1 p.m. at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home with burial in the Greensburg Cemetery. Rev. Dale Curry and Dr. Rual Perkins will officiate. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Greensburg Methodist Church. Active pallbearers will be Ike Durham, James W. Vaughn, Garnett Gupton, Bobby Clem, Clevis Jeffries and Wayne Edwards. Honorary pallbearers will be George Wilson, Arley Wilson, Lynn T. Blakeman, Glenn Pruitt, John Ewing, Larry Judd, Virgil Price, E.J. Milby, George Winn, Omar Shuffett, Frank Wright, Jack Blakeman, Willie Frank Parson, Henry W. Williams, Sam Tuggle and Boyce Hudson. Obituaries of Green Co. Ky.
