Edward preferred to be known as Edward Wilkinson, their step-father's last name. Edward H. Wilkinson of Lewiston, a retired Burlington Northern Railroad employee and longtime Troy, Idaho, resident, died Thursday of causes related to diabetes at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center at Lewiston. He was 79. He was born Nov. 20, 1916, in Munich, N.D., to Truman and Anna Goertzen Wilkinson. He moved to Bonners Ferry, Idaho, with his mother at the age of 4. He spent much of his childhood in northern Idaho, except for a year when he attended sixth grade at Sheridan, Wyo. He lived near Twin Lakes and Rathdrum, both in Idaho. At the age of 18, he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps near Coeur d'Alene. He also worked on farms and ranches around the area to help himself get through high school. He graduated from Rathdrum High School at the age of 21, with the class of 1938. He then worked as a telegrapher for the Northern Pacific Railroad, which later became Burlington Northern Railroad. He worked in various stations around Coeur d'Alene and lived a short time at Palouse, Wash. He retired in 1979. He married Alta L. Friddles in Coeur d'Alene July 7, 1962, and they resided in Troy. An earlier marriage ended in divorce. He moved to Troy in 1940 and to Lewiston three years ago. He was active in the Boy Scouts and was a Scout leader in Troy. He was also a member of the Troy Volunteer Fire Department. He attended the Troy Nazarene Church and was a member of the Moscow Elks Lodge. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, working crossword puzzles, golfing and bowling. He is survived by his wife of Lewiston; two sons, Gary Wilkinson of Moscow and Lyle Wilkinson of Boise; a daughter Vicki Kleve of Reedsport, Ore.; a stepdaughter, Darlene Wolff of Kendrick; a sister, Frances McCoy of Rathdrum; a half-sister, Agnes Brazington of Alaska; two foster children, Ricardo and Lezette Byers of Sacramento, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Short's Funeral Chapel in Moscow. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, also at the chapel. The Rev. Richard Brunstetter of the Troy Nazarene Church will officiate. A graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Lewis-Clark Memorial Gardens in Lewiston, followed by a memorial service at 3:30 p.m. at the Royal Plaza Retirement Center in Lewiston. Memorials may be sent to the Troy Nazarene Church or the Troy Fire Department.
