Born in Moravia, the son of Martin and Kathrina (Dokaler) Cermak. Married (2) Marie Vitera on August 8, 1887 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Abie, Nebr. The passenger list for the ship Cumberland , which left Hamburg, Germany for America (via Glasgow, Scotland) on March 19, 1880 includes the following family (former residence Vohrazenic, Bohemia) : Franc Cermak (age 40), Katerina (36), Franc (10), Johen (8), Vaclac (4 3/4), Marie (3), and Tomas (3 months). On April 12, 1880, the family arrived in New York City via Glasgow on the Circassia : Franc Cermak (40, farmer), Katerina (36, wife), and children Franc (10), Johan (8), Vaclac (4), Marie (3), and Tomas (6 months). The 1880 census (enumerated June 14) lists the family in Chapman Precinct, Saunders County, Nebr.: Frank Chermock (41, farmer, born Bohemia), Catherine (wife, 33, keeping house, Bohemia), Frank (son, 10, works on farm, Bohemia), John (son, 9, Bohemia), Vatslof (son, 5, Bohemia), and Mary (daughter, 3, Bohemia). The youngest son Tomas isn't listed and presumably had died during the intervening weeks. According to his probate file he died March 10, 1914 and was survived by his widow Marie (age 50 years) of Brainard and 12 children: Frank J. (43), of Brainard; John (41) of Ulysses; James (38) of Bee; Rudolph (36) of Garrison; Mary Volck (34) of Atlantic City, Iowa; Eva Machacek (32) of Brainard; Stazy Plisek (30) of Garrison; Emily (23); Antonie (21); Joseph (20); Anton (18); and Agnes (16), all of Brainard. Funeral services were held in the Catholic church at Brainard, Friday morning, at 10 o’clock, conducted by Rev. Father Klein.
