Bio
Barbara J. Hammond, 63, of Grand Island, formerly of Sargent, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, at Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha due to a battle with cancer. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. The Rev. Wayne Hasselquist will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Sargent. Mrs. Hammond was born Feb. 22, 1949, at Ord to Aloyze and Libby (Pesek) Osentowski. Survivors of the immediate family include her husband, Rod; a daughter, Brigitte Dickey and fiance, Todd Jarosz; one sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Bobby Studdard of Alabama; and brother and sister-in-law, Darwin and Teresa Osentowski of Elkhorn. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Logan and Keisha Dickey, all of Grand Island; several nieces and nephews and their families. Barb grew up in the Sargent/Ord areas and graduated from Sargent High School in 1967. She married her high school sweetheart Rod Hammond on June 29, 1969, and they resided in Sargent. She worked at the Sargent District Hospital for 25 years as a nurse and assistant administrator until the hospital closed. Barb and Rod moved to Grand Island in 1995, where she worked in Radiology and in the information desk at St. Francis Medical Center until her death. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and loved the time she spent with them. She had a love for her yard and flowers. She had a special heart and was caring and compassionate towards people. She will be remembered for that and her smile. Barb was preceded in death by her parents.
