Bio

ORD -- Ernest J. "Ernie" Chalupa, 89, of Ord, died Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, at Valley View Living Center in Ord. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. The Revs. Mark Maresh and Tom Ryan will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord Bohemian Cemetery. Mr. Chalupa was born Sept. 22, 1923, to John and Barbara (Codr) Chalupa on the family farm near Anselmo in Custer County. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lydia, and a son, Donald Chalupa. Survivors of the immediate family include a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Virgil Voss, of Abbeville, S.C., and a daughter-in-law, Janet Chalupa of Grand Island. He was also survived by four grandchildren, Marie Nielsen and her husband, Greg, Daniel Wadas and his special friend, Patty, and Andrew and Ashley Chalupa; four great-grandchildren, Emmylou, Katie and Hollie O'Brien, and Brian Nielsen; three stepgrandchildren, two stepgreat-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-great-grandchild. Ernie was raised on the family farm and graduated from Anselmo High School in 1941. On April 30, 1945, Ernie was united in marriage to Lydia Pesek at Ord. They made their first home in Anselmo and in 1946, they moved to a farm northeast of Comstock. The couple farmed until moving to Ord in 1964. From 1964 until his retirement in 1989, Ernie worked at Co-op Oil Co. After retirement, he kept active doing lawn work for neighbors and cleaning Dr. McCartney's office with his wife. Ernie was a 50-plus year member of ZCBJ Lodge No. 112. He enjoyed dancing and playing cards. The couple enjoyed traveling and made it to all of the 48 continental states. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Bennie Wadas; three brothers, Joseph, Raymond and Frankie Chalupa; and three sisters, Julia Navrkal, Helen Pesek and Mary Skala.
