Bio

Helen Pesek, 84, of Ord died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at her home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Ord. The Rev. Jim Miller will officiate. Burial will be in National Bohemian Cemetery west of Ord. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Ord Memorial Chapel. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Pesek was born Feb. 13, 1918, to John and Barbara (Codr) Chalupa at Anselmo. She was raised 3 1/2 miles north of Victoria Spring State Park, west of Sargent. She was educated at Columbia Table District 142 near Anselmo and was a 1938 graduate of Anselmo High School. She also attended Commercial Extension College of Omaha, graduating in 1941. During her school years she helped her father with the farm, working in the hay fields. After graduation she spent time cleaning and babysitting. In the early 1940s she went to Washington D.C. and was employed for the Civil Service Commission in Washington D.C. She married Adolph Pesek on Aug. 23, 1943, at Broken Bow. The couple farmed in Valley County west of Ord their entire married lives. Mr. Pesek died March 20, 2000. After her husband's death, she moved into Ord in July 2000. She enjoyed sewing, embroidering, making quilts for the family, collecting salt and pepper shakers and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include five sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Shirley Pesek, Lumire and Sue Pesek, and David and Waunetta Pesek, all of Burwell, Richard and Cathy Pesek of Heartwell, and Dale and Belinda Pesek of Ord; one daughter and son-in-law, Ione and Larry Bruha of Loup City; 21 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Ernest Chalupa of Ord and one sister, Mary Skala of Omaha. Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Robert; three brothers, Joseph, Raymond and Frankie and one sister, Julia Navrkal. The Grand Island Independent, March 10, 2002
