Frantisek & Johana (Jezek) Migl The Migl House By Vaclav (Jim) Jasek Frantisek and Johana and their five youngest children arrived in Galveston, Texas on October 3, 1874 from Czechoslavia. The ship fare was paid for by their five older children already here in America. They settled in the Praha area where Frantisek rented a farm from the Jaresh's. After six years, in 1880 Frantisek was 53 years old, he bought 100 acres for $6.00/acre of untilled land on Rocky creek, 3 miles south of Praha on the Fayette and Lavaca county line. They moved in with the Mikulik's who owned the adjacent farm. They lived in their log barn for one year, the time it took to build their five-room house and barn and dig a well. (The barn and well are still there and also the foundation of the original homestead.) On the south side of where the house was located stands one of the largest live oak trees in the area. In 1886, Frantisek bought 60 more acres at $10.00/acre. In 1890 the youngest son, Joseph, married Mikulik's daughter, Aloise, and they bought the farm from his father Frantisek who was 63 years old. Frantisek and his wife built a three-room house, a barn and a well was dug. The house was located approximately 600 ft north of the homestead. All the annual Frantisek and Johana Migl reunions were held at the homestead and at their second house until 1901. In 1902 Joseph Migl sold the 160 acres to the Raab brothers and moved, along with Frantisek and Johana to Novohard, about 3 miles East. Their new property also included a cotton gin that they operated. In 1970, brothers Jim and Ben Jasek, (sons of Vaclav & Anna Migl Jasek) and Anna (daughter of Joseph Migl) bought the house and barn unbeknownst to them that it once belonged to Frantisek and Johana. After 68 years most of the property was back in the Migl family. In 1990, Ben and his wife, Pam, bought the adjacent land that included the site of the original homestead and they built their house near it. In 2005 Jim and Shelly Jasek and Migl descendants, donated the house built in 1890 to the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC) in La Grange, Texas. Migl family members restored the house and moved it to the current site. The house displays Migl family memorabilia along with authentic furniture and items. It is maintained by members of the Migl family. The Migl House is a standing tribute to Frantisek & Johana Migl, their ten children, spouses and descendants.
