CHANUTE — Lowell O. Head, 85, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, at his home in Chanute. He was born on July 22, 1927, in Fayetteville, Ark., to Charles and Victoria (Matthews) Head. He attended Monett, Mo., High School. Lowell served his country as a member of the U.S. Army for two years. He married Ella Frieda Berg on Aug. 17, 1948, in Cotter, Ark. She preceded him in death in 2009. He was a machinist for Santa Fe Railroad and served his entire career as a railroader, retiring in 1991. He loved hunting and fishing and was an avid collector of firearms. He enjoyed his trips to Silver Dollar City and time spent in the Ozarks. He was a 32nd-degree Mason. Survivors include his children, Sheila Ramey, and her husband, Bob, of Fayetteville, Ark., Orland E. Head, LeElla Mussellman and her husband, Clay, and Dollie Sheldon, all of Chanute, Paul E. Head, and his wife, Alvina, of Erie and Michael Head and his wife, Lisa, of North Kansas City, Mo.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Leo and Charles; two sons, Lowell and Raymond; and a grandson, Tyler Stich. The service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, Chanute. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Chanute. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society and may be left in the care of the funeral home.
