Bio

Born in the village of Podmoky, county of Caslav, Bohemia, Austrian Empire (now in the Czech Republic), the son of Joseph and Anna (Zajic) Simerka. Birth date from 1900 census. Emigrated to America with his stepmother, half-brother, ad two half-sisters on the ship Baltimore which arrived in Baltimore, Maryland from Bremen, Germany on June 19, 1869. The ship manifest lists the following family group: Math. Schimerko, age 35, farmer, born Bohemia; Cather., 37; Vincenz, 12; Maria, 7; and Cathr., 6. Settled in Linwood Township, Butler County, Nebr. in 1870 where he farmed. Married (1) his stepmother Katerina (Voboril) Simerka on May 8, 1875 at David City, Nebr. Married (2) Mrs. Katerina Rajel on July 4, 1898 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Abie, Nebr. Married (3) Mrs. Barbara (Fredlick) Kucera on January 7, 1914 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. According to his probate file he died July 18, 1916 and was survived by his widow Barbara. The probate file also mentions his half-brother Vincenc Simerka and half-sisters Mary Uridil and Katie Voboril. ''''''''''' Butler County Press (David City, Nebr.), July 27, 1916, p. 7, col. 1 Abie Matt Shimerka, Sr., died at his home in Abie, Tuesday, July 18. He was ill for about three months. Death was from cancer of the stomach. He was past 80 years of age. Rev. Father Zalud of Bruno, conducted the ceremony. Burial was in the Catholic cemetery.
