According to research by Jennifer Styskal Faust (#47308726), he was born on February 6, 1826 in house #24, Bechynska Smolec, the son of Frantisek Sonka and Johanna Haskovec, and was baptized February 7. Emigrated to the United States in 1867, settling on a farm near Cedar Rapids, Iowa before moving to Butler County, Nebr. four years later. His last name was Americanized from Šonka to Shonka . ''''''''''''''''' The Quill (Schuyler, Nebr.), June 14, 1907, p. 8, col. 5 Mathias Shonka Dies. Mathias Shonka died Friday evening at the home of his son, Thomas Shonka. The funeral was held Monday, services were held at the home of Joseph Zerzan and the remains taken by train to Abby where they were laid to rest beside his wife who died in February 1906. Mr. Shonka was born in Bohemia on February 24, 1827, and was married in 1850. Seven years later he came to America and in 1871 they moved to Butler county where Mr. Shonka took up a homestead on Skull Creek, near the present location of the village of Abby. About two years ago Mr. and Mrs. Shonka moved to this city to spend the balance of their days, near their children. Mrs. Shonka died shortly after making their home here and Mr. Shonka then made his home with his son, George Shonka, until the latter moved to Richland, since which time he has lived with Thomas Shonka. Three daughters and seven sons survive him. They are: Mrs. Joseph Zerzan of this city; Mrs. Frank Cinfal of this county, Mrs. Frank Prochaska of Butler county and John, Frank, Thomas, Joseph, Wesley, M. F. and George Shonka, all of this county.
