Ernie Kucera, 87, of Abie died Monday, July 9, 2007, while fishing at Homestead Lake near Abie. He was born Sept. 24, 1919, in Linwood to John and Mary (Nemec) Kucera. He attended school through the eight grade and then assisted his mother on the family farm. He married Mildred Stuchl on Sept. 22, 1940, in Schuyler. They farmed near Linwood and Abie and eventually moved into Abie. He had his own polka band and was known throughout the country. His wife preceded him in death Oct. 2, 2006. Survivors include: two daughters, Janice (and husband, Claire) Siroky of Abie and Pat (and husband, Richard) Karpisek of Wilbur; a sister, Josie Fencl of David City; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 12 brothers and three sisters. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Abie Auditorium. The speakers will be Marvin Capoun and Jerry L. Kracl. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at Kracl Funeral Chapel in David City with the family present from 6-8 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service time Friday at the auditorium.
