Bio

Darrell Maruska, of Fort Collins, passed away on Aug. 21, 2012, following a brief battle with stomach cancer. He was 70. Darrell was born in Burwell, Neb. He spent his early life on the family farm, then moved to Omaha where he attended North High. After graduation he served in the Army and worked pulling weeds for 35 cents an hour and installing highway billboards. In 1978, he earned a degree in engineering from the University of Nebraska. His career in electronics included positions with Motorola and Union Pacific and, in 1982, brought him to Fort Collins, where he worked for Goodall Electric and Advanced Energy. He was a carpenter, inventor, reader, and follower of politics. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, birdwatching and identifying all manner of flora and fauna that he discovered on ventures into the mountains. In retirement, he worked as a handyman, became a Larimer County master naturalist and volunteered with the Poudre Wilderness Volunteers. He farmed a small acreage and had a knack for growing raspberries, which were enjoyed by visitors to the downtown farmer's market over many summers. This spring he built a deluxe chicken coop and realized an ambition of raising hens; he lived just long enough to see the first tiny eggs appear in the lawn. Darrell is sadly missed by Karol, his wife of 47 years, daughters Stephanie (Michael) Borunda and Sara (Eric Poliakon) Maruska, granddaughters Savannah Thomas and Lucy and Pilar Borunda, brother Dale (Linda) Maruska, sisters Linda (Casey) Arnold and Carol (Jim) Springer, and seven nieces and nephews. The family is grateful to members of Timberline Church, residents of La Mesa, and great friends for the kindnesses extended in recent days and to Pathways Hospice for helping us to grant Darrell's wish to be cared for at home. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m., Sun., Aug. 26, at Timberline Church, 2908 South Timberline Rd., in Fort Collins. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Poudre Wilderness Volunteers or Pathways Hospice.
