Jenkins, 87, of Norfolk will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Christ Lutheran Church with burial in Prospect Hill Cemetery and military rites by American Legion Post 16, VFW Post 1644 and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Home for Funerals. Memorials may be directed to the Servants of the Savior of Christ Lutheran Church. ——— George was called to his Savior’s side Monday, Oct. 3, 2011, at Heritage of Bel Air. George T. Jenkins, son of Lee A. and Susan (Bouton) Jenkins, was born Nov. 11, 1923, on a farm in Kalamazoo Precinct, Madison County. He graduated from Newman Grove High in 1943. He served in the U.S. Navy from July 1943 to December 1946. During that time, Jenkins served on the USS Silverbell until transferring to the USS Pensacola. During his service, the USS Pensacola participated in Operations Crossroads, the first peace-time oceanic atmospheric nuclear test series at Bikini Atoll. He also served in the Air Force during the Korean conflict. He was married to DeEtte Hahn on Feb. 24, 1951. The couple celebrated 60 years together. Three children were born to George and DeEtte: Allen, Georgia and David. George worked in sales for several years. He then worked for the Nebraska State Auditor’s Field Office, retiring in 1986. For 26 years he also served in the active Air Force Reserves. George enjoyed birding and traveling with his wife, DeEtte. He had a fulfilling retirement traveling the globe to visit friends and family. He was active and volunteered his time to the Orphan Grain Train and Lueshen’s Birders. He was recently honored for his service by visiting Washington, D.C., on the Freedom Flight. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, American Legion and the Atomic Veterans. George is survived by his wife, DeEtte of Norfolk; three children and their spouses, Allen (Jan) Jenkins of Stanton, Georgia (Kynn) Schulz of Rochester, Minn., and David (Stephanie) Jenkins of Papillion; one brother, Ed (Irene) Jenkins of St. Edward; and eight grandchildren.
