Bio

Joseph Vogeltanz, pioneer citizen of Nebraska, died at the home near Bee, Saturday, January 6th, 1934. He was born in 1849 at Womazlice [Domazlice], Czechoslovakia. His mother died when he was about two years old. At the age of sixteen he came to the United States and obtained work in the lumber camps of Wisconsin. Later he bought here some of the rich virgin soil covered with timber which he cleared and started farming. At the same time he took steps to become a citizen of the United States. In 1878 he married Mary Jisa, and six years later he came to Saunders county, near Wahoo, Nebr., where he farmed twenty-two years. In 1906 he moved to Butler county near Dwight, Nebr., where he lived on his farm till 1915 when he retired and moved to Bee. Here Mrs. Vogeltanz died in November 1928. Since that time he made his home with his children at Ord, Dwight and to the greatest part at Bee. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Vogeltanz Sr. were charter members of the Catholic church at Bee and they were highly respected by their numberless friends and neighbors. They had twelve children of whom six are still living; Mrs. Joseph Kunasek of Bee; Mrs. Martin Benes of Touhy; Mr. Thos. Vogeltanz of Bee; Mr. Joseph Vogeltanz of Dwight; Mrs. Joseph Hain of Bee; and Atty Edward L. Vogeltanz of Ord, Nebr. These children, thirty-eight grandchildren and thirty great-grandchildren survive the deceased. (January 11, 1934, probably Seward newspaper) The body was lifted from the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hain last Monday at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Dr. A. A. Huebach in charge of the funeral services. He was assisted by the Rev. M. Lawler of Ord and B. Bauer of Dwight. After a Requiem High Mass and service by Father Huebech, pastor of the St. Wenceslaus' Catholic Church of Bee, special services were held in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery at Bee, Father Huebech officiating and interment was made under charge of Chain & Wood of Seward. A large crowd of people from different towns in this part of the state was in attendance. Parents: George Jiri Vogentanz and Dorthea Hartl.
