Bio

Alice "Florene" Gould, 89, of Arcadia died Sunday, June 24, 2012, at Rose Lane Home in Loup City. Florene was born Feb. 23, 1923, on the family farm in Custer County to Albert and Flossie (Marsh) Hunt. On Feb. 29, 1944, she married Donald Gould at Loup City. He died March 27, 2003. Survivors are: son, Darrell Gould and his wife, Kay, of Arcadia; daughter, Dianne Coons and her husband, Dale, of Arcadia; six grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; 10 great-grandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild; four great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Alberta Mendyk and her husband, Carl, of Arcadia. Florene was raised on the farm, attended Knight Country School and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1942. Following high school, Florene worked in cafés in Grand Island, Loup City and Arcadia. She and Donald resided on a farm north of Arcadia where Florene assisted with the farm work, raised chickens, milked cows and cared for her husband. In 1966, they moved into Arcadia. At age 40, Florene began working at Becton Dickinson and Co. in Broken Bow. When she was 62, she retired and babysat for Eric Sell and Kendell and Kyle Kusek. Florene moved to the Manor in Arcadia and since January 2008, she had resided at Rose Lane in Loup City. Her hobbies included quilting, embroidering, word finds and enjoying the outdoors on her front porch swing. She was a wonderful cook and will be remembered for her chicken and noodles, lemon meringue pie and creamed peas. She spent a lot of time working in her yard, gardening and canning. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Larry Rickerson; brother, Kenneth Hunt; sisters, Lucille and Frieda John; and an infant stepbrother and an infant stepsister. Burial was in the Arcadia City Cemetery, Arcadia, NE. Published Kearney Hub 06/26/2012
