~*~ Floyd "Boe" Smittle ~*~ (December 9, 1923 ~ July 24, 2004) ** Veteran U.S. Navy WWII ** Floyd "Boe" Smittle, 80, of Columbus, died Saturday, July 24, 2004, at his home, following a period of illness. He was born Dec. 9, 1923, in Crestline to Fred L. and L. Faye DeGraffenreid Smittle. He was a 1941 graduate of Columbus High School. He was a veteran the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II. He took part in the Normandy invasion on D-Day. He married V. Maxine Cartwright on July 10, 1943. She preceded him in death April 25, 2003. He worked for Spencer Chemical/Gulf Oil for 36 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of American Legion Post 3 of Columbus and the Columbus Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include three daughters, Pene Kassler of Pittsburg, Debe Lucian of Columbus, and Carol Hays of Kansas City; one brother, Walter "Hap" Smittle of Columbus; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. ~*~
