Bio

Charlie Young Charlie Young, 86, a resident of Pagosa Springs, Colo., passed away peacefully at home in the arms of his daughter, Debbie, on Thursday, May 31, 2012. Service: 9:30 a.m. Friday, June 8, in Moore Funeral Home Chapel, 1219 N. Davis Drive, Arlington. Interment: 11 a.m. in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Moore Funeral Home. Charlie was born Dec. 8, 1925, to Della May and Ernest Carl Young in Handley. He joined the Navy at 17 and served in the South Pacific where he was involved in several naval battles including Palau, Leyte Gulf, Mindanao, and Luzon. It was near Luzon that the aircraft carrier he served on, USS Kadashan Bay, was hit by a kamikaze aircraft. Everyone survived the attack and the carrier was repaired and returned to service for the duration of the war. He was proud of serving his country and never missed a Memorial Day observance. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Handley. After the war he worked for boat and helicopter manufacturing companies. Later he established Custom Fiberglass Inc. until he retired after 25 years. He specialized in fiberglass repair for boats and utility boom trucks. Charlie formed lifelong relationships with childhood friends while growing up in the Handley area. This group he affectionately called the "Tater Hill Gang." He was a caring person who never met a stranger and always had a story to tell. He loved his family and even to the end was there to make things better. He had a special place for his grandchildren and during his last days his great-grandson, Cort, gave him joy and comfort. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Cecil, Clifford and Luke; and sisters, Winnie and Vera. Survivors: Wife, Adrel; daughter, Debbie and Butch Mackey; stepdaughters, Millie and Dan Mckelvy, Georgeann and Wes Allen; stepson, Hugh and Irma Ward; nine grandchildren, Stephanie, Chuck, John, Shelly, Perry, Kayla, Mallory, Lyndsey and Drew; and several great-grandchildren. He was also blessed with several good friends who meant so much to him, Turk Gibson, Mo Holman, Chuck Brazell, Chris Perry and Gus Jeron. Published in Star-Telegram on June 6, 2012
