Johann (John) married Wilhelmina Stukenbruk (also spelled Stuckenbruk), daughter of Karl and Agatha Rosenbaum Stukenbruk, on July 29, 1855 in Marienmunster, Westphalia. They immigrated to Fayette County, Texas in 1856, settling in the Ross Praire area. They purchased 102 acres of land in two different locations between 1857-1866. They had seven children with six living to adulthood. Johann and his wife died one week apart from influenza. During the Civil War, Johann served in Timmon's Regiment, Texas Co. K Infantry, Waul's Texas Legion, which fought at the Battle of Vicksburg. The men were captured by Grant's Army, eventually paroled and then called back to duty on the Texas coast for the duration of the war. Johann was captured again by Union soldiers in the Galveston area and was a prisoner until the end of the war. The location of his imprisonment is unknown.
