Marie was the daughter of John and Wilhelmina Stuckenbrok Neimann, who are buried in the Fayetteville Catholic Cemetery. She was married to Leopold Maiwald in 1890 with whom she had a daughter, Otillia. Leopold died of influenza in 1892 two months after her parents both died of influenza. William Hoelscher tried courting her, but she chose Leopold instead. Since she was widowed with a one-year-old daughter, William again offered his hand in marriage, so she accepted and married him six months later. Therefore, her wedding dress is black. Her siblings were Wilhelmina Peters, Joseph Neimann, Friedrich Neimann, Lucy Gaertner Wittmann, and Anna Wittmann. The name originally was Neumann in Germany, but was changed to Neimann in Texas due to phonetic pronunciation and incorrect spellings in legal transactions. Both of her wedding dresses have been donated to the Fayette County, Texas Heritage Archives, and her necklace and brooch are still owned by descendants.
