Wayne County Outlook 7 Feb 1963 Bruce Sloan, former Mayor of Albany, and who served three terms as a State representative, was fatally hurt on Wednesday of last week in an automobile accident near Albany. A car driven by his son, Tony, slid off KY 734 about six miles north of Albany. Sloan, age 57, died about 8:30 a.m., in the War Memorial Hospital in Albany. Three others in the car received minor injuries. They were his son, a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ned Sloan, and a grandchild, Ned Sloan, Jr. Bruce, who was one of the most widely known men in this section of the country, had been operating Grider Hill Dock and Indian Creek Lodge on Lake Cumberland for several years. He was sheriff of Clinton County from 1942-46, and before this served as State Representative of Clinton and Cumberland Counties for three regular and eight special sessions of the Kentucky Legislature. He was a member of Albany Lodge 206 F & AM. Bruce started in business at the age of 11, as a taxi driver, and operating a taxi business, then at twelve to sixteen, owner and operator of a noted dog kennel, later a bus line operator, Ford and Chevrolet dealer, insurance agent, exhibition shooter for an ammunition company, coal mine operator, timber and lumber business, stave and heading business, operating rock and sand quarries, oil business and owner of many thousands of acres of timber and coal land, as well as acres of mineral rights in Clinton and other counties, and at the time of death a resort operator. Bruce had been synonymus with outdoor sports all his life, and several times both trap and skeet shooting champion of Kentucky. The "Sportsman Digest" once said about Mr. Sloan, "He won more state shooting events than any other man or woman, according to the number he shot in, and one of the few top shooters at both." Bruce was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. J. A. Sloan. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Gay Sloan; four sons, John A., Bruce, Jr., Ned and Tony, all of Albany, and a sister, Mrs. Leah Dyer, Albany. Funeral services were held on Friday, February 1st in the Albany Methodist Church where he was a member.
