She was the youngest of nine children. She was baptized July 7, 1921, at St. John's Lutheran Church, in Leigh, and was confirmed there on May 10, 1934. She attended Dist. 40 rural school and graduated from Leigh High School in 1937. She taught school in the rural schools in the Leigh area from 1938 to 1942. On May 17, 1942, Mildred married Jerome Spulak at St. John's in Leigh. They moved to a farm north of Schuyler where they farmed, and Mildred continued to teach in the rural schools in that area. In 1961, she joined the Schuyler Grade School system, teaching kindergarten. The following year they retired from the farm and moved to Schuyler. She retired in 1978 after 40 years of teaching. She continued to be a substitute teacher for 10 years. She was a graduate of Midland College and did graduate work at UNL. In 1956, the Spulaks adopted a girl, Betty Jo. Their home also was open to many young people. Seventeen young college students lived in their home over a period of time while doing student teaching in Schuyler. They also were sponsors for Colfax County rural youth groups. When their daughter Betty Jo graduated from high school in 1966, they took in a foreign exchange student, Svein Anderson from Oslo, Norway, who made his home with them for a year. In 1977, at the age of 5, their granddaughter, Chrissi, came to make her home with them. Her husband Jerome passed away Aug. 28, 1986. Mildred was a member St. John's Lutheran Church, in Schuyler, where through the years she has served as organist, Sunday school teacher, choir member and junior choir director. She was also a member of W.E.L.C.A., Ruth Circle and Thrivent. She was a member of the Nebraska State Retired Teachers. After retirement she spent many hours doing volunteer work at nursing homes, care centers and senior centers. She entertained with her accordion in Schuyler and many towns around Schuyler. Though she was of German descent, she learned to sing Czech and had a Czech singing group for a number of years, also entertaining at nursing homes. In 1995, she received the Ak-Sar-Ben Good Neighbor Award for her volunteer services and taking care of others. Her hobbies included music, quilting and playing bridge. She is survived by her granddaughter, Christina (Brian) Bywater; great-grandsons, Connor and Gavin Bywater; son-in-law, Dennis Kolm, of Columbus; and special friend, Lambert Horejsi, of Schuyler. Also treasuring her memory is Svein Andersen (and family), of Oslo, Norway, a foreign exchange student in 1966, beloved family member since. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Lauretta Neuhaus, of Polk, and Mildred Novak, of Columbus, as well as many nephews, nieces and dear friends. Preceding her in death are her husband, Jerome; daughter, Betty Jo; brothers, Herman, George, Harold, Elmer and Arnold; and sisters, Frieda Hall, Hulda Dykes and Lillian Tofte.
