John Chmelka, Sr. was born in Slovetic, Moravia, Czechoslovakia on Jan. 31, 1845. In 1870 he was married to Anna Koza.In 1872 they immigrated to Saunders county, Nebraska, living on a farm in western Saunders county until 1904, when they moved to Prague where they lived for twenty years. From there, they moved to Bee, making their home with their youngest son, August Chmelka, where he died on March 3, 1928, after a few days illness. He was 83 years, 1 month and 3 days of age. He leaves to mourn his death his wife, Anna, three daughters and three sons, also 35 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, besides many other relative and friends. Funeral services were held on Monday, March 5, 1928, with burial in the Bee Catholic cemetery. The pallbearers were his grandsons, George Coufal, Louis Polak, Gilbert Chmelka, Joe Chmelka and Louis Chmelka. The deceased was among the early settlers of Saunders county, going through the hardship of the early days. He will be remembered by his children for the good advice given and his true and kind heart.
