Merrill Eugene "Gene" Elliott June 12, 1925 ~ May 18, 2012 Downs Funeral Home Obituary Joint funeral services for Merrill E. "Gene" and Geraldine J. "Gerrie/Millie" Elliott will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 19, 2012 in the Chapel of Downs Funeral Home with Father Denzil Vithanage officiating. Interment will follow in Algoma North Cemetery. Mr. Elliott passed away May 18, 2012 in Marshall. Merrill E. "Gene" Elliott was born June 12, 1925 in Decatur, IL to Merrill James and Pearl Beatrice Hays Elliott. He was a 1943 graduate of Marshall High School. He was retired from Southwestern Electric Power Company after 37 years of service. Gene served his country from 1943 to 1946 during WWII in the U.S. Navy as part of the 67th Naval SeaBees Construction Battalion as a Carpenter's Mate 3rd Class. He was awarded the Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the Bronze Star. He was a member of IBEW, Local 738 for 66 years. Gene and Gerrie were married October 7, 1973 in Jefferson. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Marshall. He loved volunteering in the nursing home ministries. Gene is survived by his sons, David Lee Elliott of Thousand Oaks, CA and William M. "Bill" Elliott and wife Karen of Marshall; granddaughters, Mandi Christina Elliott of Plano and Crystal Victoria Elliott Henigan and husband Tommy J., Jr. of Marshall; great grandson, Tommy, J. "TJ" Henigan III; stepdaughters, Jo Askew and husband John of Tool, TX and Geraldine J. McCarty and husband Jim of Irving, TX; and the mother of his children, Lillie Nell Mayfield. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gerrie Elliott, who preceded him in death on Wednesday, May 16, 2012; step-son, DeWayne Gillispie; and his mother and father, Pop and Mom Elliott. Pallbearers will Tommy J. Henigan, Jr., David Hopkins, Wes Hopkins, Gene Younger, Jeff Wright and Ken Hudson. Honorary pallbearers will be Marshall Knights of Columbus Council 1422, Marshall ARC, First Methodist Church and IBEW Longview Local 738.
